Susan M. Johnston, who came to be known as "Mother Johnston" to the people of Grand County, came to Colorado with her husband Tom in 1879 to hunt for gold. She was in Grand Lake at the time of the massacre of 1883 and endured many adventures as she was the "embodiment of the pioneer woman." (Cairns) Read Susie's Story, a full-length interview with Susan M. Johnston. This work, written by "Beulah" (we're still working on her identity), would have been written about 1939, based on Mrs. Johnston's statement that it was "fifty years ago this summer that I came here as a bride." |
